Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to do my kind of fun. Traveling and seeing new places is how I define relaxation for me. People call me weird but why should I be normal
Yes, seeing a movie works. Sitting in a restaurant, eating good food while listening to good music works too but traveling…adventure, that’s the source of my orgasm.
So a random photo on Instagram took myself and 2 fun guys, Deoye Falade and Akintola Adigun Akindamola to Oyo state, Nigeria, in search of the only suspended lake on top of a hill in Africa. Yes, you heard right. This suspended lake is located in a Village called Ado Awaye in Iseyin, Oyo state.
We almost cancelled the journey due to environmental sanitation which holds every last Saturday in Lagos state and some other states in Nigeria too but I was determined. I wanted to see the lake myself.
Iseyin is about 150mins drive from Ibadan while getting to Ado Iwaye took another 15mins drive from Iseyin. It was almost tiring especially when we all didn’t know where we were going. But that is why its an adventure, right?
Its sad that our government is not taking tourism in Nigeria serious. Do they even take anything serious? The place was so un-kept which made us fight kung fu with over grown grasses. I don’t even want to start going into the downs of tourism in Nigeria.
We met an elderly man who goes by the name Adediran. He took time to explain why the place looked so un-kept, described the hill and told us it will take us about 1hour to get to the top. Oh! But we did in 40mins amidst my lazy wahala.
The first Landmark we saw was the Ishage rock. Ishage Rock is regarded as one of the most powerful among the gods on the mountain.
We kept going until we found the popular Iyake Lake, which is the only suspended lake on a hill in Africa. We almost lost hope because there was no real landmark neither did we have any instructor or guidance but alas, we found the mysterious lake lying pretty on the mountain. The lake is said to be powerful and people of different faith and religion visit the lake to pray and fetch water from it.
Unfortunately, we did not get to see the Elephant tree because we never knew there was anything else to see after the suspended lake which was why the journey started in the first place. Like I said, I had fun and will do this often.
Don’t worry, I will share my adventures with you all with my travel buddy or buddies as the case maybe.

This is beautiful Elsie, Really!
Awesome climb. Beautiful sight. Oya everybody gaan climb.
I eventually realized that the footprints thingy were probably evidence of early habitation by the mountain dwellers. I remember seeing such concavities on Olumo. They were created for drying and grinding of seeds and other food materials. So much for the footprint theory. Lol.
am gonna add this to the list of places to visit
Suspended lake. I know igbeti and shaki. These are all oke Ogun collectively (northern section of oyo state). I have heard of ado awaye but never been there.
Elsie, your adventure to the suspended lake is captivating. Your determination to explore new places and share your experiences is inspiring. It’s unfortunate that some sites are overlooked, but your enthusiasm shines through. Keep embracing the joy of travel and discovery!
