When I heard about the scrapping of the Post UTME exercise I was pretty happy and probably said “if they’d just scrap math for art students, the world would be a perfect place.”
Then like every other stake holder, I wondered what would be used in place of the exam; JAMB didn’t let me wonder for too long before it introduced the point system. Click here for more on it.
Apparently, JAMB intends to use SSCE results in place of post UTME results which is a good idea if you ask me. Students have been known to place more importance on UTME and post UTME exercises than on SSCE so this evens it out.
The students would have to sit up and work hard to get really good grades in one sitting so we can expect better SSCE results and a better educational system (possibly).
But would this system really work? Would it admit students who are worth it? If we’re honest with ourselves, we know that special centers still exist and though there are students who would work hard for those As, there are those who would just pay for them instead and the ones who’d pay are way more. So if one young man works his butt off and can only get Cs and maybe one A, some other person who can’t even spell his name but can afford to pay for an A parallel result has a better chance than he does. That’s just wrong.
The post UTME exercise is something I’ve always complained about but I have to admit that it is useful. The exercise helps show who’s truly academically sound and who’s SSCE result should be reexamined. So as much as I love this system, if I had to choose, I’d pick post UTMEs any day.

My Alma mater, University of Ibadan normally used this system until 2009 to screen out some candidates. It is highly effective. On the other hand, the fact that ssce is mostly manipulated these days is a major concern.
