The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Friday, said that it would publish the register of voters to be used in the conduct of the 2015 general elections on Tuesday.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday, the commission said that this was in compliance with the provisions of Section 20 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).
The section provides that the register of voters for an election shall be published at least 30 days before the elections.
Also, the timetable and schedule of activities for the general elections released to the public on January 24, 2014 showed under item 10 that the commission “shall release/publish the official register of voters for the election on 13th January 2015.”
It also added that the commission would publish the list of nominated candidates contesting for the Presidency and National Assembly on January 13 while the list of those contesting for the offices of governor and Houses of Assembly would be published on January 27.
Meanwhile, provisional figures released by the commission’s Voter Registry Department showed that as at January 7, INEC had received a total of 54,341,610 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and had distributed 38,774,219 PVCs nationwide with a balance of 15,567,219 which were yet to be collected.
