2 Corinthians 4:13 – “And since we have the same Spirit of faith, according to what is written, ‘I believed and therefore I spoke,’ we also believe and therefore we speak…”
The words we speak determine the kind of life we enjoy. Our life will always go to the level of our thoughts. Our life will always go to the level of our words. Our words express our thoughts which are the seeds of our life. Therefore, never allow your situation to dictate the direction of your confession.
Moses did not allow the Red Sea to dictate the direction of his faith. His heart was deeply engaged with God, focusing on what God had to say. Our confession governs our faith. Confession builds the road over which faith carries its mighty cargo. Confession is not just saying words. It is not just committing the word to memory, which is valuable, but it is letting the word become an integral part of our being. It lives in us. If you must speak, think first. When the bed of confession is well laid, persevering faith lies secure on it. As you lay your bed, you lie on it.
Faith comes when the word prevails over thinking processes.
How does the word prevail over thinking processes? When you speak right, you are training yourself to think right. The word dominating your mouth will dominate your mind. It is God’s word coming forth out of your lips that produces an overcoming spirit within you. Your spirit responds to God’s word. God’s word refreshes your mind.
When you think right, you are training yourself to act right. The word dominating your heart will influence your conduct and behavior. The word prevails over the thinking processes when you begin to think right. You think right when, by an act of faith, you begin to think not of your limitations or shortcomings but of your righteousness in Christ Jesus.
In Romans 9:1, Paul speaks about the conscience. The conscience is God’s instrument for discernment. It is the communication point for the Holy Spirit as well as for the evil spirit. In other words, it is the communication point for the spirit of faith and also the spirit of doubt. It is the heart that speaks to us what God is saying. Our spirit responds to God’s word. The response of this heart is what we refer to as the conscience. What receives the word and makes it work is the heart.
Without an active cooperation of the mind, the spirit of persevering faith has no means to express Himself. The management of our heart and its thoughts is fundamental to our faith and holy living. When you order your words aright, God manifests to you the benefit of His might salvation. Words spoken in harmony with God’s word work wonders.
Let us look at something t Jesus said to Simon Peter in Luke 5:1-4. “When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch’.” Peter at first began to measure himself by himself saying in verse 5 “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything…” Peter’s mind refused to co-operate with the spirit – this was the problem he had.
Remember, if the word of God were dominating your mind, it would influence your conduct and behavior. Our mind must be taught to concentrate upon things in the spirit because the spirit expresses Himself through the mind. How? Apostle Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:13, “It is written: ‘I believed; therefore I have spoken”. That spirit of faith in you expresses Himself by believing with the heart and speaking with the mouth. God cannot work miracle through you except by your capacity to believe. Failure to act faith nullifies our confession. To God’s power nothing is impossible but you have a role to play.
Nothing of God is possible unless you act on the word, for a seed is powerless unless it is planted. When the word is settled in the heart, it becomes an instrument for the Holy Spirit to use. What God wants for you before he performs the miracle you expect is not just filling the air with idle words. It is as much about listening as it is about speaking. If you do not hear from God, you cannot speak God’s living word that brings healing, deliverance, miracles and prevails over the laws of nature.
Peter said in Luke 5:5, “But because you say so, I will let down the nets”. Peter spoke right in accordance with the truth of God’s word. Romans 14:5 says, “Let everyone be convinced in his own mind”. The word grew in Peter’s mind and gained supremacy over him at the point of conviction. Upon hearing Jesus’ word, Peter came to believe and let down his nets. Our God rewards the obedient. It is the doer of the word that receives things from God. Any man or woman can get rid of doubt by saying only what Jesus says. Peter acted faith and the miracle happened. What lesson can we learn from Peter’s experience?
The word begins to grow in our mind and gains supremacy over the thinking processes when we come to the point of conviction.
Belief is an opinion formed in the heart. When Jesus said to him, ‘stop confessing failure; I am here to support your position. Come on let down your net for a catch’, Peter obeyed. A simple trial of Jesus’ ability to fulfil His promise convinced Peter beyond all doubts as he immediately discovered he could do better than he ordinarily could; his net could not accommodate his new catch (Luke 5:4-7). For the first time, Peter was able to appreciate the Divine nature of our Lord, Jesus Christ, just as he acknowledged his own weakness saying, “Lord depart from me, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). This was the climax of the redemption. God sometimes puts us through darkness so that we may appreciate light when it comes. What is your dark moment? Your dark moment may be to make you see and appreciate light when it finally comes.
We are not here to get used to the dark but to shines as light. We Christians talk as chosen generation, a royal priesthood. We have authority because God is supporting our position. We are bold to speak God’s language. If we are walking with the Lord, we know what follows: every mountain for our sake shall be levelled.
When we realize that we cannot rise above our words, we put ourselves in the position where God can really begin to use us. A man who walks by faith requires no evidence of the senses. He does not speak to be heard by men but by God. The word becomes a living thing in the lips of believers. The confession based upon the living word rises above the senses; it gives us possession.
