Things settled down over the next few weeks after the hostile takeover attempt was thwarted by the president and his able finance chief. The ordeals that seemed to be coming fast and thick into Emeka’s life served to put things into perspective for him.
He now knew that he was not invincible and that the things that he had worked so hard to build could be snatched from him at any moment if he was not careful.
He now had a strange relationship with Cassie. Judging by all outward appearances, their affair was over. But for some reason he felt that there were still some unresolved issues that they needed to sort out before the wedding which was scheduled to hold in a week.
Emeka, true to form, made up his mind fairly quickly. He would ask her to accompany him and they would have a short chat to make sure that everything was squared away.
“Janet.”
“Yes, sir?”
“Call Cassie for me.”
“Of Course.”
He did not have to wait long before the beautiful woman’s smiling face appeared in the doorway.
“Knock knock. You called me?” Cassie said as a greeting.
“Yes, have a seat. I just wanted to know if you have any plans after work today.”
“No, I don’t, why do you ask?” she replied warily.
“I just wanted to clear the air between us before you tie the knot.”
“I thought the air was clear.”
“It still looks a little smoky to me, how about it. Will you accompany me or not?”
“Alright, Emeka, we can talk after work.”
“Thanks see you after hours.” He said as a dismissal.
“No problem.” Cassie said rising.

They met in the parking lot after work that day. Emeka led the way in his car with Cassie following close behind. He led her a short distance to the construction site of Eko Atlantic city, soon to be the most expensive real estate on the planet.
“Follow me.” Emeka said as he stepped out of his car.
“Are we allowed to be here?”
“Since when were you concerned about whether you were allowed to do something or not?”
He asked with a smirk.
“Not funny Emeka, I’m serious.”
“Well, we probably aren’t but then nobody else is around.”
He started to move deeper into the construction zone with Cassie following close behind. He weaved through scaffolding and over piles of rubbish until he found what he was looking for, a relatively secluded area where they could sit down and speak freely without the fear of eavesdroppers.
“Ok Mr. President, what is it that you want to talk about?”
“Cassie, do you realize that you are about to marry my best friend?”
“Is he your best friend? You have a very strange way of showing it.”
“I can understand why you would feel that way but yes, Jonathan is my best friend.”
“I realize I am marrying Jonathan.” She replied curtly.
“I need to know that you are in it for the long haul.”
“Emeka, is this why you brought me out here in the middle of the night?”
“Yes Cassie, it is. Now answer me. Do you really love Jonathan?”
“Dammit Emeka, what do you want from me? He asked me to marry him and I said yes.”
“That does not answer the question and you know it.”
“I am a thirty one year old African woman with no children. I have dedicated my life to my career and along comes a strong man that is not intimidated by me and who has no prior commitments.” She said the last part while looking pointedly at Emeka. “He asked me to marry him and I accepted. I love him enough to have children and build a life with him. I do not love him enough to give up my own dreams and follow him around the world. Is that what you want to hear Emeka?”
“Cassie, can you blame me? Look at what we were doing the whole time you all were dating.” He said while looking directly into her eyes.
“I know, but that is behind us now right?”
“Is it?” Emeka said, inching closer to her.
“You tell me.” She said as her breathing deepened.
“It should be.” Emeka said as he placed his hand on her thigh.
“Emeka, please don’t do this. For both of our sakes.”
“You are getting married next week, there is no going back from there.”
“I do not intend to.” She replied as she leaned into him.
“This is our last goodbye.”
“Shhhh.” She said as she placed her lips on his.
Emeka wasted no time, his actions fueled by a sense of urgency. He moved behind her and quickly unzipped her dress which pooled at her feet. The silver material catching the refection of the moon as it towered over the endless expanse of the ocean.
Cassie turned around and ran her hands up his body, a body that she had intimate carnal knowledge of, as her deft hands moved around his body.
For the last time, they consummated their illicit affair. The consequences of this last fling would derail Emeka’s life more than he ever thought possible.
