I used to detest red wine due to its taste. I never really liked its sour kinda taste until an elderly friend told me it’s healthier to have red wine than white wine. He did not stop at sharing that information with me, he sent me a cartoon of red wine. LOL. My friends are something else.
So after having a glass of red wine last night, I woke up inspired to share benefits of red wine with you. You must also note that too much of everything is bad. That it has its benefits doesn’t mean red wine should be abused.
Good for the heart
Taking red wine in moderation has been thought as healthy for the heart. Certain substance in red wine called antioxidants and the alcohol is likely to prevent coronary artery disease, a condition that leads to heart attack. According to prevention.com, a professor of cardiovascular and nutrition at the university of Wisconsin – Madison, John Folts, PhD, says the antioxidants in red wine can help keep the blood vessels flexible and reduce the risk of unwanted clotting.
Good sleep
When I have sleeping difficulty for reasons best known to the sleep god, red wine always comes to the rescue. Red wine can aid peaceful sleep due to the presence of a substance called melatonin – it stimulates your body clock and keeps you healthy.
Lowers Cholesterol
According to a study from the Universidad Compultense de Madrid in Spain, High-fiber Tempranillo red grapes, which are used to make certain red wines may actually have a significant effect on cholesterol levels. Stylecraze.com notes that the French are the largest consumers of red wine and they consume it regularly as a part of their diet. They also consume cheese and other foods that have high saturated fat but their body metabolic rate is always healthy. This is because red wine lowers the cholesterol content and avoids the accumulation of saturated fat.
Glowing skin
Everyone wishes to have a healthy glowing skin and this magic is one of the many benefits of drinking red wine. The red wine benefits for skin is because of the antioxidants that protect your skin and prevent it from ageing. That’s why some parlours are now providing red wine facials. Drinking red wine stimulates the development of new cells in the skin’s outer layers. It improves the hydration of the skin to make it look younger, supple and glowing. (Look out for benefits of red wine on the skin in subsequent posts)
Stronger Teeth
Red wine contains polyphenol that helps to strengthen the gums and prevent gum inflammation. Further, it can also prevent the teeth from decaying by hardening the enamel.
Cancer Prevention
Red wine contains a component called guercetin that can prevent lung cancer. It can also lower the risk of breast cancer and reduces the growth of cancerous cells due to the presence of resveratrol.
Burn Fat
According to Natural world news, a study reported that drinking wine in moderation or red grape juice could help you burn fat better. The findings suggest that consuming dark-colored grapes, whether eating them or drinking juice or wine, might help overweight people better manage their weight and related metabolic disorders, such as fatty liver.
Generally, red wines are considered a healthier option than white wines. However, high quality white wines from certain winemakers may offer more health benefits than some red wines. Wines do not only improve physical health; they can also help you overcome stress. If you are suffering from a serious disease, the calming effect of wines may give you the mental focus to help you overcome the illness. Even though wines are beneficial to your health, they should not be consumed excessively.
So consume a moderate amount of red wine. Regular glass of red wine can be helpful to your health.

I love wine country and since I live in Washington I’ve visited winey country here and in Oregon, plenty of times. The last time I was in Napa I was very young and would love to return as I really loved the landscape. Domaine Carneros is quite grand and I’d love to see the winery -Grgich Hills Estate- that put California wines on the map. I also like train rides and that would be such a fun way to taste wines and see the scenery pass by slowly.

Curious about this wine, I decided to join a wine tour to taste what was originally known as the nectar of the gods. I’m usually not a fan of bus tours, but this one was leaving from Athens, making a few stops in the old city of Tamarack and finishing off in the countryside taking us to two wineries.Stellar Bottles
